This week in photos

This week isn’t much different than other winter weeks here in Portland. Which is to say it’s as gorgeous as ever!
I love it all; the fog, the sorbet sunrises and sunsets, the lacy silhouettes of hibernating plants and florescent moss adorning just about everything.

Memories of Winters Past

blue-winter-sky-branches
As winter approaches, I can’t help but feel a longing for what I consider to be real winter, the Minnesota/Wisconsin winters that I knew for many years.
People in Portland talk about it being cold and I literally laugh at them, as it dips below freezing a handful of times. Even in the mountains it’s not that cold; it hovers around 30 degrees or so. I am an equal opportunity scoffer, however. When someone back home complains that it’s much too rainy and dark, I may remind them that it is nothing compared to the cold and damp we have in the Pacific Northwest from November to May.
Wherever you go, people complain about the weather. But I was one of the few who fully adored the Minnesota winter, so when people complain how bad it’s going to be this year, I wish I could politely tell them to stop breaking my heart. It was my favorite season by far, I still pine for the peaceful magic of freshly fallen snow, donning layers and layers of winter gear to go for a hike, and all the fun things to do in the snow.

Pacific Coasting: Sunsets and Elk in Manzanita, OR

manzanita-sunset-2
I have had the pleasure of experiencing a beautiful area of the Oregon coast thanks to my neighbor-turned-friend Jennifer. Her family lives in the quaint little town of Manzanita, and she got married on the beach in September. I joined Jen there again for a weekend of cooking, chatting, napping and a long sun and hail-filled walk in October. It was true rejuvenation!
The night before the wedding, the sunset was vibrant orange and yellow. To make the weekend even more memorable, the day of the wedding was incredibly warm and sunny. If any of you have been to the Oregon coast, you know that “warm and sunny” are not typically used in the same breath as “the coast”. It is usually grey, rainy and chilly, no matter the time of year. It was the warmest I’ve ever seen the coast by far.
